Understanding the Water Distribution System

There are a number of components of the water system leading from the production facility to your home or business. The following is a general overview of the water distribution infrastructure.

Customer-Owned Service Line – This line runs from the meter into your home and is owned and maintained by the property owner.

Meter Setting – This water meter is positioned between the customer-owned service line and the OMU-owned service line. The meter is read monthly to determine water usage for each customer. It is maintained by OMU.

OMU-Owned Service Line – This water line runs from the meter to a water main.

OMU Secondary Main – This main is a smaller main connected to a larger primary main. These are maintained by OMU. These secondary mains typically deliver water to locations (homes and businesses) along smaller streets.

OMU Primary Main – These are larger mains used to distribute water throughout the OMU system.

Flexible Main Connectors – These connectors, some of which are lead, are used to connect smaller water mains to larger ones.

Service Line Connectors – These connectors, some of which are lead, are used to connect water mains to galvanized service lines.

Short Service Line Connectors – These connectors, some of which are lead, run from the water main directly to a meter setting.
