OMU Celebrates National Drinking Water Week, May 3–9

Owensboro Municipal Utilities (OMU) will join public water providers across the nation in celebrating National Drinking Water Week, May 3–9, 2026, recognizing the importance of safe, reliable, and affordable drinking water.

For more than 125 years, Owensboro Municipal Utilities has proudly provided high-quality water service not only to its customer-owners but also to water districts throughout Daviess County and surrounding areas.

Safe, Reliable Water for Our Community

Owensboro is fortunate to source its water from a protected underground aquifer, accessed through a well system and treated at the state-of-the-art Cavin Water Treatment Plant, which has a treatment capacity of 30 million gallons.

OMU’s water system is designed and operated with a strong focus on reliability, affordability, and compliance with all state and federal drinking water regulations, including the Safe Drinking Water Act.

Continuous Testing and Quality Assurance

OMU operates its own certified water quality laboratories, where trained professionals conduct daily chemical and bacteriological testing throughout the treatment and distribution system. Samples are collected at multiple points across the process and throughout the community to ensure water safety and quality every day of the year.

An annual Water Quality Report is also made available to customers, summarizing testing results and confirming continued compliance with all regulatory standards.

Recognition of a Dedicated Workforce

National Drinking Water Week is also an opportunity to recognize the dedicated OMU employees who work around the clock to deliver safe, dependable water service to the community.

Community Celebration

As part of the week’s activities, OMU will host a customer appreciation gesture on Wednesday, May 8, at the Customer Service Center. Visitors will receive a free reusable water bottle, while supplies last.

Local Ownership, Regional Value

As a locally owned public utility governed by a community-based board, OMU rates are established in open meetings and remain among the most competitive in the region—and, according to industry comparisons, among the lowest in the nation.

OMU encourages customers to learn more about their water system and join in recognizing the essential role drinking water plays in daily life during National Drinking Water Week. Visit OMU Celebrates National Drinking Water Week, May 3–9
