Types Of Positions

Owensboro Municipal Utilities’ three utilities require a variety of positions — providing essential services to the residents of Owensboro — ranging from meter readers to equipment operators, from customer service personnel to line technicians.

OMU Job Application Process

When a job becomes available, the position is posted on this page. OMU also advertises the job opportunity in the Owensboro Messenger-Inquirer classified ads, in the “Help Wanted” section.

Applications are then accepted at the Department for Employment Services in the Career Center. Eligible applicants are notified of the date, time and location for a civil service exam.

Civil Service

OMU is a municipal utility, owned by the citizens of Owensboro, therefore some employees are covered by civil service laws.

Job applicants are required to take a civil service exam which is approved and administered by a five-person Civil Service Commission. The exam may be written, oral, demonstration of skill or a combination of these. Exams are job-specific and different ones are given for each position.

Following the test, applicants will receive the results via mail. According to civil service law, OMU is allowed to consider only the top scores from the testing procedure for employment.

A test score is valid for one year and a specific test cannot be taken more than once a year. Applicants can take an exam for different jobs as many times as they wish.

New OMU employees are required to go through a one-year probationary period.

Veteran Points

Kentucky statutes provide that any honorably discharged member of a branch of military service who is a registered voter of Owensboro-Daviess County shall receive a 5 percent increase on a passing score on a civil service exam. Proof of military service and voter registration must be attached to the application.
