On May 11, OMU celebrated the expansion of its William R. Cavin Water Treatment Facility. The plant was expanded from its original 10 million gallon per day treatment capacity to 30 million gallons per day. The expansion became operational in March of 2020, but the celebration was postponed until this year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
This $42 million expansion allowed for the decommissioning of the Plant A Water Treatment Plant, which was shut down in 2020 due to its age and settlement of a portion of the structure.
In addition to the expansion, a new 36-inch water main was constructed from the Cavin Plant, crossing State Route 144 along Daniels Lane by the Owensboro Health Hospital and eventually connecting to the existing water main at Grimes Avenue.
The expansion and water main construction were on-time and on-budget despite pandemic conditions and supply constraints.
